I can remember him singing his little song and inviting us all to sing along with him. I wonder if he would be allowed to do that now in such a harmless way. Ray 3 out of 3 found this valuable. I remember Old Black Joe very well. I think his name was Alderman Dunbar and he came to St.Mary's as part of the yearly School Inspection. If I remember correctly, we were also tested on our knowledge of the Catechism by some priest or other on the same day so Old Black Joe's singing was was really looked forward to by all the class. We may have even got the afternoon off, if I remember rightly.

Hi Everyonewhat a great "thread" - I have thought about this man Joe for many years - in fact I still sing the song to my small granddaughter when I go up to say night night (when she stays my house". Our teacher,Harry Hanson, was very respectful that Joe visited - i remember he was an Alderman. I have no recollection of him being called "Old Black Joe". I always remembered him as "Poor Old Joe". If I have remembered the song it went something like this: "I'm coming ,I'm coming though my voice is growing dim,I hear the gentle voices calling poor old Joe". Such nostalgic and heart warming memories Liam 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

l would agree with you Liam the work "black" from the song was omitted but the song itself was from the mistral time and was called "old Black Joe" the trapp family do sing it on the video but it is a lot slower version alderman dunbar would come with 2 cases one was a small case and he would take out the face masks of the minstrals and would all hope that he would give us a mask to wear those where happy moments at school and his memory has stay with a lot of children long after he has gone from this world
