I have been trying to remember the shops I was familiar with - These are the one's that come to mind: Mostyns (corner sherburn st?) - it was like "open all hours" Wollies (corner Holland St) Savoy cinema; Jobes (cycles) Hull Savings Bank (near Brazil St) H.Hesk's - the grain merchants - near the railway line Waistells (tailors) a sweet shop run I think by ex City player - Burbanks? The (wet) fish shop where I bought winkles to eat! I'm giving it some further thought - help please.

Trying to remember events from so long ago is somehtign of a mixture both of school and of Hull as it then was. The one thing I remember most cleary is the sense of community which existed in those days and a general interest in teh well-being of friends and neighbours. Remembering school in those days certain names come back to me of staff and pupils, Sister Mary Aquinas, of course, was the headteacher she seemed to be so old even then other sisters included Sister Mary Joseph who always seemed so kind and Sister Mary Bernadette who was quite the opposite in my recollection the only lay teacher was Miss Ryder. Holderness road seemed to be the hub of our lives with East Hull Baths where we had our swimming classes every Tuesday morning, the Savoy Cinema and Holderness Hall (Cinema) . Holderness Road was teh main shopping area fro east hull adn boasted the City's secodn Woolworht's store. The old Craven Park was the home of Hull Kingston Rovers and thursday and saturday dog racing.
We went to the Savoy Cinema as a school group with the sisters havign special permission the see "The Song of Bernadette," for which Jennifer Joens received the academy award.
V.E. day of course brought great celebratons and at school we all received a certificate declarign the end of teh war signed by King George VI.
I remember Sister Mary Aquinas visiting each classroom every Monday mornign with a large register in which she recorede our attendance (or not) at mass and whether we had been to confession and holy communion. I remeber the friday's in church wattign to go to confession adn trying to think of sins worthy of One Our Fater and three Hail Mary's.
Time runnign out on me will try more later.

i think the drain played a big part in some people,s live,s , i know it was a big part of me when i was at school and after for a while, with the drain being tidal, we use to go fishing in it, also swimming in certain part,s , raft building , and taking our air rifle.s and shooting the vermin, which there was a lot of ,i use to catch some rather big eel,s when fishing, i then use to sell them on to our neighbour in ;thomas st, ( mattinson) who was an ex cockney, iff i had a £1 for every time i fell in fully clothed,i would be very rich today, several times the drain use to break it,s bank,s, and badly flood certain area,s, then we had the playground, which every kid who went to st mary,s knew about, espeacially (smoker,s corner) were certain lad,s and lasses use to enjoy a quick drag, it was also used after the last bell had rang for some lad,s to sort their difference,s out, (fight), it was all good clean stuff and no one was ever seriously hurt, ( bring back the good all day,s anytime) i shall never forget them that,s for sure

Hi Paul - yes I got so fed up hearing the Beatles had come to Hull at the ABC I wroe to Steve Massam when he did Radio Humberside to tell him they came to Majestic twice! I am so glad you remember too! I loved Majestic - Tramps Balls, Pyjama Balls etc - all so innocent! I saw Dave Berry and Gene Vincent among loads of other acts - it was great! Dave Berry still tours and mentioned Majestic when he came to City Hall recently. He has hardly changed.

Hi Liam - I remember te Cuban crisis so wel and hiding behind the settee when the news was on. I was so frightened - it sticks in my mind so clearly how near we came to nuclear war. And yet -- a few months ago I was reading somebody's biography or something reasonably credible - and in this it was stated that Kennedy and Kruschov (not sure about spelling) had already come to a secret agreement about Cuba prior to the deadline but it was to save face or something that they played this game of brinkmanship knowing all the time they had agreed the outcome. Have you read of anything similar? I remember being so angry that millions of people were made to feel so terrified all for political gain. Sorry - didn't mean to go on but you struck a nerve! I'd love to know whether it was true or not.

I was told of the site by a long lost cousin so decided to check it out. On checking it seems that there is no one listed who goes back as far as I do and that seems rather sad and definitely makes me feel old.
I attended St. Mary's in the early 1940's leaving eventually in 1946 to go on to Marist College which was then teh local Catholic boys grammer school.
I remember my day's at St. Mary's as generally pleasant with a few bumps along teh way. The headteacher then was Sister Mary Aquinas adn oteh teahcers I remember included Sister Mary Joseph, a nice sweet person, and Sister Mary Bernadette who coudl never be descibed as being a sweet person. There were no male teachers at teh school then though punisments were meted out in a very masculien way.
Boy I rmember inclded Keith Brady, Mike Wever, Arthur O'Neill, George Martin. Graham Souter, Brian Rooms, Cive Stancer adn girls names tht coem to mind are Pat Wright who married George Martin and Cathy Davison.
These were the war years but I vividly remeber V.E. day which was celebrarated with street parties all over the city, amazing what mothers could do in those days of rationing, for many of us oru father's were stil in teh forces so in those early 40's yeasrs it was very much the women who kept the country going.
The school had no rugby team in those days but did have a football team who played and lost with monotonous regularity.
Sport though did play a big part in our lives adn in those days Boxing was Britains second most popular spectator sport after football.
The city had its two rugby teams as it does now adn in those days Hull City were firmly entrenched in the old 3rd Division North until the arrival of Raich Carter
I am sure as I continue to read these thread's more memoires will come back but it is nice to see that somehow St. Mary's lives on..

Hello Nick Marist must have improved in your day the standard, for a grammar school, at my time there was to give it best only mediocre but i believe by your time there were more lay teachers there who possibly could teach. In my time it was mainly priests with little or no understanding how to actually teach I learned more at St. Mary's. Still sad though that the grammar school system went especially in Hull which rushed to embrace the comprehensive system. Thanks for replying
