PHOTO EXHIBITION

l had a meeting with members of the committee of the Carnegie Heritage Centre center and they confirmed that they would hold a exhibition of our site photos. I think this is wonderful news has it means we will be able to reach many ex pupils and their families who do not have access to the Internet When we held the school re-union earlier this year l was total amazed at the large number of photo’s people had of the school and pupils, however we where not able to scan or copy them on the night. The centre has agreed to copy any photos that people may bring in on the days of the exhibition providing it does not infringe on any such copyrights.also copies of any photos which are on display will be available at a small cost all monies will go to the Carnegie heritage centre. The exhibition will be held over a 2 day period Friday 5th March from 5 00pm till 900 pm and Saturday 6th March from 10 30 am till 400 pm The aim of the exhibition IS TO PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL by showing the people of Hull, Photos of the first catholic school every to be built east of the river Hull The format of the exhibition will be photos and history of St Mary’s school RC Wilton Street. also photo’s of the area surrounding the school which many pupils came from and a brief history on the sister of mercy who came to Hull to teach at St Marys I would like to ask all members that if they have any photo,s of the school, church or pupils could they please send them in asp has the cataloging of the photos is going over the next few months in order to be ready for March. At the same time may l also ask you that has there is going to be and "NOW and THEN" section on the pupils of the school could any one who now wishes to write a small history of them selves and family which could also be put up on display (i.e. your life after school) The Carnegie heritage Centre provides a venue for local and family history research for the people of Hull l would like to thank the committee of the centre for agreeing to host the exhibition

"THE SCHOOL LIVES ON "

If any one where to walk down Wilton street they would not see any thing that would give a person a clue that a school or church once stood down there for so many years, for both the church and school where demolished many years ago. On the site where they once stood now stands some industrial units. I was not there at the previous reunions but when l attended the one this year it was clear to see that the pupils who had attended the school no matter how old they may be now have never forgotten the school or its teachers. We can never rebuild the school, but what we can do is keep its memory alive .It was clear to see that some people had lots of photographs of the school and the pupils who attended the school. They also had some grand stories to tell and it would be a great shame if they where lost in the years to come. The site has given some of us a chance to save our memories and photo’s and while we continue to add to the threads and the pages of the site, the school will never be forgotten.“THE SCHOOL MAY HAVE BEEN DEMOLISHED BUT IT CAN LIVE ON “ With your memories lets build this site to remember THE SCHOOL OF ST MARY’S RC WILTON STREET

My name is Paul Whitney during my school years l lived down Ripon Street on Hedon Road.and went to St Marys rc school Wilton street HULL from 1950 T0 1960
l tried hard to find if the old school had a site but the only link l could find was "friends united" it seemed a shame that there is no record of the school or of the pupils and teachers who attended it . l built this site in the hope that a little of the schools history will be preseved. My message to all you ex-pupils of ST MARYS RC WILTON STREET is please help me to build the school memories on this site .

WILLIAM RATCLIFFE
Great memories of the rugby from C , B and A teams. We lived in Kent Street so didn't often stay Dinners but went home for chip sandwiches - if we were lucky!
Flash Flannigan and I got into trouble for putting a banger down a sink hole outside the school in the street.
Sister Mary Aquinas was standing right behind us like a ghost! I can still hear the swish of that walking stick cane! Every day made its own fantastic memory!

GRAHAM HAVLAR
Playing on the spiders web on the playground. the parky trying to stop me and I ended up at the childrens hospital down Park Street Spring Bank for 2 stiches under my chin. I've still got the scar (is it too late to sue)
Going to the boys club and playing snooker, and once being made to box in the boxing ring even though I was scared stiff. I remember Mrs Ryder, very strict but a good teacher all the same.

ROSEMARY OLDRIDGE

I lived across the road from the school at number 8 Wilton Street and was still late most mornings!
I have so many happy memories I don't know where to start. St.Mary's was a great school with excellent teachers and a real sense of community. Discipline was accepted as part of school life and we respected our teachers - that's how things were then.
I remember my very first day at school, when I was five - I couldn't reach the coat peg and a boy called Bill Cunningham who seemed so tall to me hung my coat up for me! I thought he was wonderful! Where are you now Bill? I also remember wetting my knickers and one of the nuns sat me on the big heating pipes to dry and feeling so humiliated even at that age!!!
My uncles and aunties lived at number 12 Wilton Street and Uncle Frank was involved with the boys' boxing club for many years and also ran the St. Mary's Social Club. My Mum used to sew dresses for the May processions and items for the Sale of Work.
Mum also went to St. Mary's as well as her brothers, sisters and cousins. One of her teachers was Miss Ryder and she used to walk up and down between the rows of desks picking bits from the students clothes as she passed. One day, a lad in the class shredded some cloth and stuck the threads all over his jumper! I think he probably got the cane for that!
Miss Ryder was such a smart lady and regularly after Sunday Mass everyone would gather outside to chat. One day my brother Steve, who was about seven at the time, had sneaked a "whoopee" cushion out that he had got for Christmas and just as my Mum and Miss Ryder were chatting he sat on it and everyone turned and stared - Mum was so embarrassed! Sadly, Steve died of a duodenal ulcer a couple of years ago - I miss him so much - he aways had a great sense of humour

i think i was at st marys approx late 51 and all 52 , (very hazy recollections) after sacred heart.The Mercer family at the school were my cousins, i remember sister mary Dominick &sister mary Aquinas. forgive spelling!! i remember a boy named i think John Murry who became my sort of minder!! .
thinking what to say at confession &walking from wilton st to paragon station to catch a 48 bus to east Hull on cold winter nights with a gang of other urchins!! also a lot of rough tough kids

Was at St Mary's 1950-1960, George Pearson and David wainwright were my closest school friends. How I remember St Markie fish shop, beeuutiful.
I used to sit next to a pale skinned, very black haired boy called Jimmy Pawson, Mr Hanson who was at the first reunion?. at hedon rd Marfleet lane many years ago, said Jimmy as an artist and was then living down Redcar or Spyvee st. in regards to Carol Cambells thread, it was David Willerby, who was also at that reunion mentioned. I also emigrated to Canada in 1966, but am back now. Mr Hanson was a terrifc teacher and stood up for some of us in 1960 when told we couldnt go to the leaving tea because we had'nt been to church, he demanded we should and we did. Is Terence Walmsley related to Janet?. I rember we had to say prayers for a boy that had drowned in a swimming pool on the weekend but I cant remember who it was. I was a very shy lad and dont remember knowingly doing anything wrong, but do of course remember getting the edge of a ruler from a nun for not going to church and my sister Pauline who is 10 years older than me remembers pushing sister mary aquinas aside as she was hitting a boy who was having a fit and storming out of the school never to return. Thats all for now.

....My first day at school seemed like utter chaos and mayhem,with me reaching out teetering on my chair and falling over trying touch another pupil.The teacher with another pupil stood on a desk seemingly trying to extract something from his nose,but it was a really enjoyable first day. Ithink the teacher was miss Leahey who had this huge stick on top of the blackboard threatening to use it if we was naughty, she didnt use it of course but had the desired effect... But great memories.................................................................................................................

story of my father;bill brady;how clever he was ,and how he attended church
more than i ever did,( i did try). and the memory of ;mr harry hanson; who when he came to st ,mary,s was a ( non smoker) , but after while with us he was
smoking about ( 40 a day). ah/for the good ole day,s.
DANNY LANE DRAIN
i think the drain played a big part in some people,s live,s , i know it was a big part of me when i was at school and after for a while, with the drain being tidal, we use to go fishing in it, also swimming in certain part,s , raft building , and taking our air rifle.s and shooting the vermin, which there was a lot of ,i use to catch some rather big eel,s when fishing, i then use to sell them on to our neighbour in ;thomas st, ( mattinson) who was an ex cockney, iff i had a £1 for every time i fell in fully clothed,i would be very rich today, several times the drain use to break it,s bank,s, and badly flood certain area,s, then we had the playground, which every kid who went to st mary,s knew about, espeacially (smoker,s corner) were certain lad,s and lasses use to enjoy a quick drag, it was also used after the last bell had rang for some lad,s to sort their difference,s out, (fight), it was all good clean stuff and no one was ever seriously hurt, ( bring back the good all day,s anytime) i shall never forget them that,s for sure

JACKIE BRADY

My Dad always made me eat a large spoonful of Codliver Oil
and Malt before going to school, I can still taste it after all these years, it was absolutley vile!
Adored the processions that we had down Holderness Road. The outside toilets, absolutley freezing in winter! Many a happy time spent on Danny Lane plagy, remember getting a lovely black eye off the horse that was on there, and the 'big old traction engine' what a rust bucket that was! Popping into the parky's hut to get warm near his fire, (wouldn't be allowed nowadays.) Bottles of milk , always went for the fat dumpy bottles because I thought there was more milk in them than the thinner bottles.
Trips to the seaside, Hornsea I think it was, lovely 'sand sandwiches' to eat.
Being sick after I made my first Holy Communion, Miss Leahy had to take me out of church,
she was not too pleased as I remember.

My two elder sisters and brother also went to St Marys, they are John Veronica and Sheila Brady,
our John started in 1949 or 50, my two sister's started there in 1956 and '57.
Our Von remembers Mrs Monks tieing her to the blackboard for being 'naughty' in class,(imagine teachers doing that today!)

My Dad Bill use to talk alot about St Mary's Boy's Club, he did a bit of boxing when he was younger,
he alway's told me that the club was haunted by an old nun, sadly he has passed away,
he had so many memories of the club, but sadly they are all gone now, I wish I had found this site sooner, he would of loved it.

Remember being in flood's of tears when it was time to leave St Mary's at the age of 9, and having to go to St Richard's. It felt strange not going into church before school started.

Left St Richard's when I was 13 and moved onto St Mary's Grammar (all girl's school, god it was boring without the lads, lol)
Left St Mary's Grammar when I was nearly 14 and moved to Belgium with my Dad and his partner.
I opted to start work rather than go to school in Belgium, and started work in a chocolate factory.
Also worked in a very 'posh' poodle parlour, Book distribution warehouse, Spent weekends working in a pub, and worked as a Bar dispenser in a restaurant, before finally returning to England, (Oh, happy days!)

CAROL CAMPBELL

I am living in Canada since 1967 , when we imigrated . I was at St mary's from 1950 to '60
remember most of teachers mentioned on the site , but only a few of students names .
Hillary Newton, Pat Giblin were my close friends , I sat next to Carol Sugden in Miss Ryders class . I remember Marie Hildyard . She was a good laugh! I also remember Paul Whitney and David Wilby -Wilerby? There was a boy that was a realy good dancer, when we used to go to the club, I was 14 or 15 then . us girls called him 'Rubber legs' Dont know his name ! . My sisters were Sheila , Jeanie , (Older than me ) --

I remember running into the corner of the brick wall, then spliting my lip open in the playground! :o(
I have memories of my middle sister Shelagh, being sick in church at Easter Mass, after eating ALL her easter eggs before going to church! (Dad used to work at Needlers Chocolate Factory!)
My older sister Margret was May Queen and Dad was so proud, he walked the full proccesion next to her! :o)

my first day at school,being taken by my mother,crying a lot,finding a full (unopened bar of cadbury's chocolate - stopped crying temporarily),going into the "babies" class - teacher was ita ~Gallagher,who has been a friend since and who died only recently.
Going to school along Holderness Rd,and dashing to the overhead walkway that went over the railway line,near Burleigh St,and getting covered in smoke from the "steam" engine.
I have thousands of memories of St.Mary's/pupils - it shaped my whole life.

when i arrived at st marys i was in mrs mills class and she asked me to stand in front of the class and sing witch i did then she sent me to miss ryder to sing in front of her class she and mrs mills thought i was good so did i sheila

I remember the nuns teaching us sister mary Joseph, sister mary dominic, and sister mary aquinnis. I was May queen one year and Mary Elm was retiring queen from the year before.
I have many happy memories of st Marys and a few bad ones also.I lived down Studley street
then which was later demolished ,so didnt have far to go .My mother also went to the school as a young girl.My two brothers peter and keith [deceased]also went they were younger than me.

I remember my first day at school i was petrified I cried every day for the first week then I settled down the teachers always knew who had got me ready for school by the state of my hair if my sister had got me ready I would be very smart otherwise I would look a little untidy but out of all my school years St Marys bring back the happiest memories ............................................................................

those were the days who does not remember Mrs monks she could be chalking on the blackboard and still fling round and throw the chalk duster right on target my head which happened to me many times we got up to all sorts even hiding new batches of canes which was delivered when miss Ryder was out of the classroom we used to put them behind a big closert Janet hedges i remember well to many to mention you think of you school days it brings tears to your eyes it was a strict school all my family went there hodgins was our maiden name but i have lots of happy memories to i am glad i came upon this site

CAROL BURNHAM

I remember a classroom that had cupboards that went round the sides built into the wall. I think they were interconnected with other classrooms. The boys used to climb in them and move from room to room.
I remember being caned frequently for blotting my work, not going to mass, being late for school and couple of times when I was slapped. One teacher slapped my face and my mother went mad. She didn't mind me being hit just not there. Miss Ryder had dozens of canes hung on her wall and Mrs Monks used ritual humiliation to destroy any child that she didn't like, from throwing things at them, tying them to the board or standing them in waste bins.

I remember the Centenary Concert for the school - in fact I can still remember the new words to The Bells of St. Mary's which Miss Gallagher (the babies teacher) wrote especially for the occasion.
I can also remember ringing the school bell and going up to the staffroom after the teachers had had their break to wash their dirty pots!!!!

I was baptised a catholic,but for some reason i went to courtney st school. after my good mate, john crawley,introduced me to rugby league, i managed to get transferred to st marys from courtney st, who didn't have a rugby team,at that time. my first teacher was mrs monks [ god bless her] she wasted no time in gaging me and tying me to the blackboard,telling the class that i was a Protestant who should not be at this school.i got over this,and we got on OK after that. looking back it was a great school for me, and i am very happy i attended there, leaving in 1959

MALLY BARNETT
Fighting with other kids on Dansom Lane Playground on my first day after leaving Sacred Heart school. Going to Mayberry Road for our sports on the bus. All those really rough and tough kids, who made me understand what life was all about. Some of the kids came from very poor families, and this taught me to understand that everyone was not created equally. Saint Marys taught me to repect everyone, something I practice to this day.

I can remember that in my last year I was deputy head boy and my friend Gerard was head boy. i can remember that when we used to go to the sports Field somewhere near maybury road the teacher used to let me ride his bike up there as he must have lived near. in the junior classes I can remember the nuns who were very strict and Mrs monk who tied you to the blackboard., Mr Hanson was very good also the head Mr Watson.who was not against giving you a clip round the year if you had done something wrong and i can remember the flying blackboard rubbers. but the school taught you respect and discipline that is sadly missing in to days society...........................................................................

But wow how she managed to focus my mind during her lessons. What a relief to go on to Sister Mary Dominics class after that year of torment but How about Quizzy Quina? I stood in fear of her(well at least when she was wielding that bamboo cane).

My lasting memory was of my first monday at school when Father O'Riodan.came into the classroom and asked all the new children who hadn't been to mass on Sunday. THE KING IS DEAD
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

It was cold that February morning in 1952. The day began like any other. Little did we know how important a day in history it was to be.

I was 7 years old and a pupil in Sister Mary Thomas' Class. We stood up behind our chairs as usual to say our morning prayers. Sister Mary Thomas asked us to say a special prayer for a very important person who was ill.

We then sat down to being our lessons.

Sister Mary Aquinas came into the class looking very serious and spoke quietly to our teacher.

After she had left the classroom Sister Mary Thomas told us to stand up again and to pray for the soul of King George V1 who had died. The date was February 6th 1952.

We were than asked to pray for our new sovereign, his daughter Queen Elizabeth 2nd.

I remember that day as if it were yesterday.

When June 1953 arrived and we celebrated the Coronation all school children received a bag of glace` fruit sweets and a silver spoon. It was probably not real silver.

I was off school ill at the time the sweets and spoons were given out and recall feeling very upset that I had missed out on the treat. I need not have worried for they were waiting for me when I retuned to school.

Absolution Days and Saints Days

My Mother remembers having to fast from midnight on a Sunday for Absolution
Day, the next morning being at mass which went on for approx 1 hour or so.
You would hear a loud bang were someone had fell off the foot stood, passed
out, fainted, threw hunger caused by the fasting.
Then they would all have to go across to the Convent Hall, were they would
have their own pack lunch wrapped up in newspaper, a cup of cocoa would then be provided by Sister Mary Phillips. No cling film in those days, the
newspaper print would be all over the bread.
(I wonder if it was the Hull Daily Mail) ha ha. paul says (could be our daily bread)
Under the Iron fire escape was Miss Culkins class, the boy sat next to my
Mother was called Ronny Tong, he use to come to school with his hair all
plastered down with margarine, then when the sun shone throught the window
the margarine would run down his face. What ever happened to Brylcream.
The girls were sent to a very big old house on Witham to do their
housekeeping, the ladies there were two spinsters both called Miss Buckem.
Six girls were sent each day to Wash, Iron, polish the floors, and lots of
other chores etc, you could see your face in the floor. They had to arrive
and hang their coats up in a lodge at the bottom of the garden. One morning
my Mother arrived and sat on a brick copper in the lodge, one of the girls
Enid Draper had a cigarette and passed the ciggy around (a Woodbine).My
Mother tried one puff according to her.
Through the ray of sunshine coming in
through the window could be seen the smoke, so in came Miss Buckem straight
over to Mum, smelt the smoke on her breath and expelled her from
housekeeping, sent her back to St.Mary`s were upon Sister Aquirness gave her
the belt across her arm, she got home that day to tell the story and was
hoping for some sympathy from her Mother only to get leathered again for the
crime. But hence to say she still has the Certificate for Housekeeping and
Cleanliness from St.Mary`s.

I did not attend the school myself. I went to St Bedes when it was in the church hall and then to Sacred Heart and on to St Mary's Grammar
My sister Chris Kenny attended the school as did my Moorcroft Cousins who lived across the road. One of my cousins taught at the school (Mary Kenny) and my aunt Sheila Moorcroft (nee Kenny) helped out at the church for many years - so the school and church is very familiar to me. My 2 sisters and brother also went to the school, they are John Veronica and Sheila.My sister Vonny was tied to the blackboard by Mrs Monks for mis- behaving in class., apparently it was something she did regular,not my sister,lol Mrs Monks. Both my sisters hated her.
My Dad (Bill) use to do a bit of boxing in St Mary's boys club, and also helped some of the lads with boxing, he always said that it was haunted by an old nun.
The 'dickie nurse' coming, and if you had nits or dicks she smothered your hair in lotion there and then. The health van coming, and giving you injections.

I loved going to St Marys, it was one of the best experiences of school I can remember.....Life was good and I spent a lovely part of my childhood with my father I must tell you all that my father had to do our tea when we got home as my mother was at work. He was an expert on heinz soups and boiled eggs!! Mind you to this day I still love heinz soups and boiled eggs. Such lovely happy memories.

PAUL WHITNEY Like most pupils my days at school where sometimes filled with a mixture of moments of sadness and happiness. Many a tear fell not because l was crying in pain but because of the moments of sheer enjoyment l was experiencing and l was not able to hold back the tears. there is one time l can remember with real pride in my heart and that was when we as youngsters played at the city hall in a school band. The only instruments we had where small drums, tambourines, triangles and clappers we where accompany by a teacher playing the piano. The piece of music l can’t remember but oh how we did bang those instruments. My parents could not attended that night so my brother came to meet me from the hall he had enough money on him either to catch a bus home or if we where to walk we could have a bag of chips. The chips won and has we came out the chip shop l was able to look back at the city hall and think to myself “l have played on the stage of that grand building” tears where falling down my face and my brother said what the heck you crying for. yet l knew l could never explain that feeling of pride which swelled up inside of me.

:- I rember the rocking horse in babies, playing in a percussion band, indoor and outdoor processions in May, singing 'Bring Flowers of the Rarest' while Mary was being crowned on the second verse, polishing the desks on a Friday with little pots of lavender polish. The partitions being taken down in the junior classrooms for the Sale of Work in November. Mrs Monks giving me the cane, Miss Leahy, Mrs Chinnery, Miss Galagher, Miss Ryder. Social's at East Hull Baths when they were boarded over for winter, there was dancing and fancy dress competitions. Going to City Hall to sing in the choir - I'm on that photograph on the front row, first on the right

When I was a kid we used to play at Sammys Point, all that was over that side of the river was cocoa mill and it was wild sort of country and they had stacked timber from the ships. I believe it is a lot different now, lived in Strawberry Street Drypool and it was in one of the history books as being the most bombed parish in the UK. My sister in law Sheila Portz (Brady) said you were a relative of her. There was the Brady's and Bowen's when I was growing up.

The building of St. Mary's school-chapel, in Wilton Street,was for the Catholics east of the river Hull. This building, which cost £3,500, was opened on October 8th, 1856, and continued to be used as a church until 1891.

Guide to Hull – 1891) ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC MISSION CHAPEL built in 1856 at a cost of £2,700. It is a neat structure of redbrick, in the Early English style. The building is used for the dual purposes of a school and chapel, the Sanctuary being cut off from the school by large folding doors. The schoolroom is 90 feet by 30 feet, and the high-pitched roof attains a height of 43 feet. New schools have been recently erected adjoining the chapel. It is intended to erect a more convenient and imposing church, and to use the present building for educational purposes only

St marys nuns Hull

In 1856, with the approval of the Right Rev. Dr. Briggs, Bishop of Beverley, Rev. Dean Michael Trappes, parish priest of the only Catholic parish in Hull, begged for the services of the Sisters of Mercy from Baggot Street in Dublin, their Mother House. The Order had been founded by Mother Catherine McAuley in 1831, to follow a life devoted to social service, including teaching, visitation of the sick in hospital and home, child care, shelter and training for unemployed girls. So great had been the demand for Sisters, that he was referred to the recently established Convent of Mercy in Clifford, West Yorkshire, to which the Sisters had come in 1855. Five of these came to Hull in January 1857, reinforced by a novice and a postulant from Baggot Street, to a small house attached to a recently built school chapel in Dansom Lane/Wilton Street. Thus was opened the first Religious House in the town since the Dissolution. When the postulant was clothed in St. Charles’ Church, she was the first woman ever to receive the habit in Hull.
The Sisters took charge of the new school in Wilton Street – 90 boys, girls and infants - and the Girls’ school in Canning Street. Alongside this went their characteristic work of visiting the poor and the sick in their homes. Before long, they were allowed to visit the prison

dangers of lead poisoning so even cribs were painted with brightly colored lead based paint. Medicine and Bottles with tablets did not have child proof lids

No seat belts or air bags in cars, nobody knew or if they did told our parents smoking and drinking was bad for the baby, kids shared coke from one bottle, soda had masses of sugar and we ate real white bread and butter and everything else including full fat milk that we are now told is bad for you

Parents couldn't reach us ( no mobiles ) and most of the day we would be out playing with friends and parents knew we would be safe with hardly any weirdos wandering the streets. If we got caught doing stuff we shouldn't the cops would take us home and we may well have a got a hiding for breaking the law ( but no do gooders saying mustn't smack children ). And if we played up in school the same applied.

While playing we got cuts and bruises and the occasional tear in jeans but it was just part of being a kid and no visit to the hospital.

We had no fancy games but could play for hours making a Go cart or a new tree swing and for other games most times we would find a ball and whatever we could use as a bat. or in the summer all jump into the nearest place we could find and if the water wasn't that clean we just didn't swallow it.

We rode our bikes with no helmets and doing whatever stunts we could ( bikes were so much heavier and hard waring ) and always had punctures to repair or get dad to help with.

If we didn't get in the team we were not good enough and that was that.

But most of all we were allowed to be kids

To dream, to invent and to play.

It's no wonder that the generation that grew up then created some of the most innovative and exciting technology we have today

Trying to remember events from so long ago is something of a mixture both of school and of Hull as it then was. The one thing I remember most clearly is the sense of community which existed in those days and a general interest in the well-being of friends and neighbours. Remembering school in those days certain names come back to me of staff and pupils,
Sister Mary Aquinas, of course, was the headteacher she seemed to be so old even then other sisters included Sister Mary Joseph who always seemed so kind and Sister Mary Bernadette who was quite the opposite in my recollection the only lay teacher was Miss Ryder.
Holderness road seemed to be the hub of our lives with East Hull Baths where we had our swimming classes every Tuesday morning, the Savoy Cinema and Holderness Hall (Cinema) . Holderness Road was the main shopping area fro east hull and boasted the City's second Woolworth's store. The old Craven Park was the home of Hull Kingston Rovers and Thursday and Saturday dog racing.

We went to the Savoy Cinema as a school group with the sisters having special permission the see "The Song of Bernadette," for which Jennifer Jones received the academy award.

V.E. day of course brought great celebrations and at school we all received a certificate declaring the end of the war signed by King George VI.

I remember Sister Mary Aquinas visiting each classroom every Monday morning with a large register in which she recorded our attendance (or not) at mass and whether we had been to confession and holy communion. I remember the Friday's in church wanting to go to confession and trying to think of sins worthy of One Our Father and three Hail Mary's.

I don't often think about my childhood ,but this site has got me realy going through my memories . I remember most of the shops mentioned . Does anyone remember the rag man coming around ringing his bell? I think we got a few pennies if we gave him some old clothes.
I know one day I gave him a pretty new top of Mam's , I was mad at her at the time ! Then I felt real guilty afterwards- (My catholic upbringing) I used to look forward to the milk man coming , I would run out as soon as I saw him , and sit on doorstep- drinking the cream off the top .I was always a picky eater and a skinny kid, so Mam didn't mind! We had a fish shop down our street so on a Friday she would send me for some for our Tea , and I used to always ask for 'scraps' I liked them better than the fish -HA!
I remember Dad getting up an hour ahead of us girls so he could get the fire going and warm the place up-it was always so freezing in a morning in winter .I must have been a wierd kid-I was always excited when the coal was delivered , and loved to watch as he threw it in our coal house in back yard -clouds of black dust flying everywhere! Tommy Mackew was his name. He used a horse and cart to deliver ! Us kids used to play in the bombed out house at top of our terrace There was one on practically every street ! We had a little grocery store in our terrace called Hudson's ,as soon as I had a penny or 2 I would go and get Kay-lie (Is that wrong spelling)and a liqurice to dip in it .
I had to walk through an ally way to get home when I got off the bus at end of Craven St every day , does anyone rmember it-We called it Ping Pong Ally? I used to run like mad when the train came through-it was so loud!
It was scary when it was dark nights and foggy! We played Hop scotch -kick the can-or we roller skated up and down the street . Carol Campbell

When we were young

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.
When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'clackers' on our wheels.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the back yard tap and not from a bottle - tasted the same.
We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles at times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us all day and no one minded.
We did not have Playstations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them.
We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits. They were accidents. We learnt not to do the same thing again.
We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue - we learned to get over it.
We walked to friend's homes.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and although we were told it would happen, we did not have very many eyes out, nor did the live stuff live inside us forever.
We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

Enjoyed reading this page. Brought back memories of my nanny doing her washing, which was usually an all day job for her. I remember a lot of people used to use the little 'dolly bags of blue' to get their whites clean, which were made by Reckitts. I worked at Reckitts in the '80s until 1996 when we got made redundant, I worked on a machine that made the blue but they were produced in blocks, I still have a box of them upstairs,they were the last blocks of blue to be made on my machine. The machinary was all then shipped to France.
As for the 78rpm records go, my attic is full of them they were given to my partner when his Dad and Grandad passed away, had no idea Elvis sang on 78's until I heard him.

And the goodies we use to have as kids my pockets were always full with some kind of goody. Penny dainty's seemed to last forever and Arrow bars, the toffee use to be so creamy, rainbow kaylie and liquorice to dip into it was lovely
We had a small corner shop where we lived and me and my sisters would get the things we needed and asked them to put it on Dad's bill, which he paid at the end of the week. Don't think he ever found out that my middle sister was getting loose cigarettes and putting them on on his bill, lol!

i will never forget the stews my mum made with the leftovers from sunday dinner . nothing ever went to waste not like today . mum always did the dumplings which were made from self raising flour salt n pepper and margerind .they always rose out of the pan and were delicoius . i still do these today , my grand children ask me to go and do a stew for them and they go mad on these dumplings . i also like them better than the suet ones . mum always used stork and she used to send us to the shop for loose cigs when she was skint 5 woodbines or park drive , and i recall the joke made for the cigs . it was 2 woodbine was walking down the street crying and a park drive asked it what was the matter . and it said kensittas. silly joke really . i loved bonfire night when all the gangs would go hunting for stuff for the fire . and we would throw the spuds in to cook . . mum used to also have a long toasting fork which she did our toast with in the mornings . and oh how i miss the coal fires

l have created this page because on seeing the topic on the "shops of Holderness road" l relizes what an important part Holderness road played in many of our lifes has well has the streets around the school

SCHOOL DAYS of YESTER YEARS

On reaching the age of 5 l had to attend school at St Mary’s I just could not understand why l had to go to this school when all my friends where going to Williamson street school. The reason of course was l was a catholic and was to be taught by the nuns .who came from the local convent. Later on l was to learn that they where the Sisters of mercy but believe me l never saw them give us kids any mercy. Far from it has l was soon to learn that if you misbehaved and did not do has you where told, you was punished. however over the years l have met many nuns and found that they where full of kindness and understanding so it seems my childhood memories of nuns where blinked has been a child l never saw the whole picture and only picked out the bad parts.

To me the classrooms seemed to be small for the large number of children which where to be taught in them.. There was never no school uniform we kids just went in our every day clothes if you where lucky you had shoes if not you wore sand shoes (canvas) . All the boys would have to wear shorts trousers until reaching the age of 10 0r 11. I longed for the day to come when l could wear long trousers
Each morning you where given a bottle of milk these came in small bottles and the milk monitors would have to lug the crates to each classroom. The milk was foul in the summer it would be warm and horrible and in the winter it would nearly be frozen so that when you drank it you would end up with a frozen brain but thinking back my brain was always frozen, has l never seemed to take any thing in and my mind would drift away. How I wish now that l had played more attention.

School dinners where a shock , with a menu of boiled fish ,liver, tasteless stew and meat pies with all crust and no meat. The sweets where even worst has sugar was still on rations. Lumpy rice puddings, watered custard on top of a jam pudding but l think they had forgot to put the jam in it.

It seemed like every day l was stood out side the head masters office having been caught misbehaving or some other mischief. Once sent to the head master there was no other out come but the dread cane and l always though it depended on the mood of the head master how many strokes you would receive you either got 3,4 0r 6 it never seemed to be 1,2,5.

"THEY GOOD OLD DAYS"
When l talk to my grand children now about my early life I often say those where the good old days. l remember my parents saying the same thing about there past . what l think is that it seems that every ones “good all days” where when they where young. So here what l think where the good old days, it was a time when every one down the street where your friends, it was not strange to have 2 or 3 best friends and it was the same for your parents they all knew each other and would never pass by with out some form of greeting. Now people seem afraid to say hello.and just want to hurry on bye.
my "good all days"fell l believe in 3 parts of my life. my days at school, my early days at home and my growing years has a man however l will continue to talk of my school years has l am sure the other 2 chapters in my life may bore you.

I think we all disliked school at some time but there where also times you where please to be going back to school. l cant remember any one arriving at the school by car it was either bus or walk. And how we did walk in all kinds of weather only stopping if we found a big puddle to jump in and cause a splash and when the sun shone trying to jump on each other’s shadows. Has far has l can remember not many children where brought to school by their parents the streets seemed certainly a lot safer in those days.
Has for race there where only two types of people who went to our school they were the “average family” or the not “so well off” no one cared what color you where the only race issues where on who could run the faster.

Weapons at school never, the only weapon you had was your peashooter and a pocket of dried peas .yes you had fall outs and would have a scrap but it was only with your fists and it was a one to one fight no one else joined in, if it looked has if some one was getting the better of the other then it was soon stopped Any one getting “high” well that just meant who could get on top of the money bars first or trying to get the swing over the bar. Yes you may have back answer the teachers but the fate of been sent to the headmasters office kept most off us in check and if your parents found out then you where in more trouble.
Talking of “well off’ you where consider “well-off “if you came to school with your own pencil ruler and rubber. Having your own fountain pen that was a real blessing because the school pens where awful you could never seem to judge just how much ink you needed on your pen.
Now kids have got to have their kit with brand names when they do PE(even changed its name ) but when the lads at our school did PT it was just a case of taking your shirt or jumper off if you had a vest on great if not then tough. it was the same thing with your shoes if you had sand-shoes ok ,if not then socks or bare feet no one cared and no one laughed at you there was no such thing has having the brand names. once school finished we would run home has fast has our legs would carry us,for this was our time to play.
There where 80 families that lived in the street where l lived but only 4 of the families where catholic yet at no time did religion every became an issue. we kids just played together no one said l cant play because your a catholic or C OF E. and it was not until l was 11 that l first came across religious prejudice of any kind and that came from a member of my family who lived up in Scotland and they where church of England. that now leads me to life on the street in the good old days hmm think that can wait for another day

MY DAYS AT SCHOOL by ANN JOYCE

I started st Marys in 1953 aged 5 years . we were poor in those days and didn't have much . we use to walk very slowly to school shuffling our feet and many a time my father would ride up behind us and kick our butts and say get a move on . we were sometimes crafty though because there ere two ways into school . he would watch us go in one way and we would wait awhile ad sneak out the other way . lol.but now I wish i could go back to those days and I would work really hard to make a good career for my self and make my parents so proud of me .they were wonderful day s.
I had a very large family at the school . cousins sisters brothers . my mum had two brothers and four sisters and all there children went to our school . you will know most of them . bradys-joyces-shaws-middletons-myers-giblins to name but a few . our parents attended the school before us when they were young and in fact were taught mostly by the same teachers.my mum was taught by mrs monks miss culkins and miss walsh and miss ryder . mrs monks was standard 3A then my mum got knocked down and was in hospital for 10 weeks when she returned she was in miss Cukins class she was also in sister mary phillps class standard 2B.THE GIRLS SHE RECALLED WERE DOROTHEY SEEKINGS AND AND JEAN HARTLEY ALSO NORAH ECCLES.these are all good memories and there are more to come . I am so proud to have been a st marys pupil.we all loved the plagy and went on there straight after school for half hour or so.the tuck shop was great and Iloved the dinners . of course they are not the same nowadays .we had cornflake packets hanging out of our sand-shoes . and nit nurse and health van always came round to the school .
most of us were rough and ready but I don't recall much bullying .anyway kids could stick up for themselves , that's how we were brought up . no running to mammy or daddy as you were a chicken if you did .our best game was hopscotch -or marbles . swap charms we got from machine outside shops down kent street

ST MARYS IN THE 1940, by GEORGE LAWSON
I was told of the site by a long lost cousin so decided to check it out. On checking it seems that there is no one listed who goes back as far as I do and that seems rather sad and definitely makes me feel old.

I attended St. Mary's in the early 1940's leaving eventually in 1946 to go on to Marist College which was then teh local Catholic boys grammar school.

I remember my day's at St. Mary's as generally pleasant with a few bumps along the way. The headteacher then was Sister Mary Aquinas and other teachers I remember included Sister Mary Joseph, a nice sweet person, and Sister Mary Bernadette who could never be described as being a sweet person. There were no male teachers at teh school then though punishment were meted out in a very masculine way.

Boys I remember included Keith Brady, Mike Wever, Arthur O'Neill, George Martin. Graham Souter, Brian Rooms, Cive Stancer and girls names that come to mind are Pat Wright who married George Martin and Cathy Davison.

These were the war years but I vividly remember V.E. day which was celebrated with street parties all over the city, amazing what mothers could do in those days of rationing, for many of us our father's were still in the forces so in those early 40's years it was very much the women who kept the country going.
The school had no rugby team in those days but did have a football team who played and lost with monotonous regularity.
Sport though did play a big part in our lives and in those days Boxing was Britain's second most popular spectator sport after football.
The city had its two rugby teams as it does now and in those days Hull City were firmly entrenched in the old 3rd Division North until the arrival of Raich Carter
I am sure as I continue to read these thread's more memories will come back but it is nice to see that somehow St. Mary's lives on..

SUSAN SENT IN THIS ARTICLE ABOUT HER MOTHERS DAYS AT SCHOOL
The girls were sent to a very big old house on Witham to do their housekeeping, the ladies there were two spinsters both called Miss Buckem. Six girls were sent each day to Wash, Iron, polish the floors, and lots of other chores etc, you could see your face in the floor. They had to arrive and hang their coats up in a lodge at the bottom of the garden. One morning my Mother arrived and sat on a brick copper in the lodge, one of the girls Enid Draper had a cigarette and passed the ciggy around (a Woodbine).My Mother tried one puff according to her. Through the ray of sunshine coming in through the window could be seen the smoke, so in came Miss Buckem straight over ,smelt the smoke on her breath and expelled her from housekeeping, sent her back to St.Mary`s were upon Sister Aquirness gave her the belt across her arm, she got home that day to tell the story and was hoping for some sympathy from her Mother only to get leathered again for the crime. But hence to say she still has the Certificate for Housekeeping and Cleanliness from St.Mary`s.

Was at St Mary's 1950-1960, George Pearson and David wainwright were my closest school friends. How I remember St Markie fish shop, beeuutiful.
I used to sit next to a pale skinned, very black haired boy called Jimmy Pawson, Mr Hanson who was at the first reunion?. at hedon rd Marfleet lane many years ago, said Jimmy as an artist and was then living down Redcar or Spyvee st. in regards to Carol Cambells thread, it was David Willerby, who was also at that reunion mentioned. I also emigrated to Canada in 1966, but am back now. Mr Hanson was a terrifc teacher and stood up for some of us in 1960 when told we couldnt go to the leaving tea because we had'nt been to church, he demanded we should and we did. Is Terence Walmsley related to Janet?. I rember we had to say prayers for a boy that had drowned in a swimming pool on the weekend but I cant remember who it was. I was a very shy lad and dont remember knowingly doing anything wrong, but do of course remember getting the edge of a ruler from a nun for not going to church and my sister Pauline who is 10 years older than me remembers pushing sister mary aquinas aside as she was hitting a boy who was having a fit and storming out of the school never to return. Thats all for now.

don't often think about my childhood ,but this site has got me realy going through my memories . I remember most of the shops mentioned . Does anyone remember the rag man coming around ringing his bell? I think we got a few pennies if we gave him some old clothes.
I know one day I gave him a pretty new top of Mam's , I was mad at her at the time ! Then I felt real guilty afterwards- (My catholic upbringing) I used to look forward to the milk man coming , I would run out as soon as I saw him , and sit on doorstep- drinking the cream off the top .I was always a picky eater and a skinny kid, so Mam didn't mind! We had a fish shop down our street so on a Friday she would send me for some for our Tea , and I used to always ask for 'scraps' I liked them better than the fish -HA! I remember Dad getting up an hour ahead of us girls so he could get the fire going and warm the place up-it was always so freezing in a morning in winter .I must have been a wierd kid-I was always excited when the coal was delivered , and loved to watch as he threw it in our coal house in back yard -clouds of black dust flying everywhere! Tommy Mackew was his name. He used a horse and cart to deliver ! Us kids used to play in the bombed out house at top of our terrace There was one on practically every street ! We had a little grocery store in our terrace called Hudson's ,as soon as I had a penny or 2 I would go and get Kay-lie (Is that wrong spelling)and a liqurice to dip in it . I had to walk through an ally way to get home when I got off the bus at end of Craven St every day , does anyone rmember it-We called it Ping Pong Ally? I used to run like mad when the train came through-it was so loud!
It was scary when it was dark nights and foggy! We played Hop scotch -kick the can-or we roller skated up and down the street . Carol Campbell

We all attended the nearby primary school. There was a concrete playground which still remains today with not a blade of grass in sight. It had no indoor toilets until about five years ago. I was hopeless at just about everything, possibly because I had bad eyesight and couldn't see what was on the blackboard. My Dad insisted on school giving me extra homework, mostly maths. He was only trying to help but the result was a horror of maths that I took with me throughout my schooling. School wasn't really a seat of learning, it was a place where you had to be very quiet and well-behaved. In 1956 when I was ten I went to senior school. It had no playing fields, just another sloping concrete playground with outside toilets, too awful to describe. For games lessons there was a corporation double-decker 'bus to take us to the local park where there were hockey and football pitches etc. We changed in the field, in the full view of people walking their dogs. Whenever possible I hid until the bus had left and preferred to do a detention instead. Our school had a boy's half and a girl's half and never the twain shall meet was the order of the day. There was a high concrete wall down the middle of the playground.

l was born in Brighton in 1954 and by 1958 I had started primary school. I remember a tiny school with a wood stove to heat the classroom in winter. The school had two teachers who had both taught my mother. They were kindly plump ladies who would sit a child on their laps at story time. I don't remember learning very much; we had slates to write on and naps on little beds in the afternoons. Playtimes were fairly boisterous affairs spent jumping off the old air raid shelters, I do remember noticing even at that age, that many of the children were poor, often unwashed and many had to wear plimsolls even in winter and the nit nurse was a regular visitor. However we all found a penny to buy an ice bun which was delivered with our milk each morning. Out of school, time was spent playing on the street till the stars came out, Sundays started with Sunday school, drawing pictures of miracles and parables, followed by homemade lemonade in the church hall.

RE-UNION

What a truly amazing night with over a hundred people turning up from around the UK to attend the School Reunion the atmosphere in the room was buzzing and a wave of happy emotions filled the air. Can you believe that Angie Moor traveled all the way from Inverness setting of in thick snow so that she could be at the night to share her photos stories and memories of her years at St Mary’s and what stories there where to share has all the many photographs were passed around the room.

Each photograph opening a window to the past we had all shared at some time in the school years It was great to see the friendships rekindled has school friends of long ago meet up once again and many a phone number was exchanged to keep those friend ships alive in the future

What a wonderful sight to see so many people sharing their memories of the school and while some of those memories may not have been good ones it was clear to see every person was very happy been able to talk with people who could relate to them “the Ravenser” was truly

“AN INN OF HAPPINESS”

I myself was so happy and a tear came to my eye when Christine and Marie presented me with a plaque which contained your lovely messages and signatures. It is a treasure l will always keep reminding me of the night It was certainly a “Night to Remember” and the icing on the cake was when Mr. Joe Milne one of our old teachers turned up.

The night could not have happened with out the hard work put in by Christine and her family so l would like to say a big thank you to them because l did not deserve the all the credit given to me. The donation box was opened in front of the bar staff witnesses and found to contain 94 pound and 54 pence this figure was passed on the gentleman who had so generously Donated the buffet

l would like to thank that gentleman has with out him the buffet could not have been laid on Finally l would like to thank you all for attending the night, your photograph s stories and memories once again brought St Mary’s back to life,however l do hope that we don't wait 20 years for the next re-union

REUNION AT THE RAVENSER 4th MARCH 2009

Well the eagerly anticipated reunion has come and gone, but will not be forgotten.
I met so many unexpected people and exchanged some great stories.Also people had some
outstanding photographs.My brother Ray recently posted a photo of the him at the Boxing club and last night
met up with the "lad" that was stood next to him on the photo!
I had a really memorable evening, made all the better by Hull City "thrashing" Fulham!
Now that the reunion has taken place,we must not leave it at that but continue to use this wonderful site
to exchange more memories/photos etc and keep the momentum going forward.

Hi to you all,
I am away on a visit at present so am bit behind with my mail, but just had to say a big ,big thank you to ever one who turned up for the St. Mary's reunion. So enjoyed meeting everyone.
It was so fantastic to be able to thank the members who have shared their photos with us. Liam what an opportunity for Ray to meet the person on his boxing picture.
I saw some real treasures and just hope they get put on the site.
One in particular was a picture of Mrs. Monk's classroom. It would be great to have a copy of that one. There were also some memorable shots of St. Mary's Church and school before and during the time it was being pulled down.
What a bonus if they appeared.
To all our members, old and new it would be so good if you could fill in your profiles. We could learn so much more about our school and pupils.
For us all, come on, turn out those old shoe boxes and biscuit tins and see what photographic treasures we have hidden away.

David Smallwood (Middlesbrough diocesan archivist) has kindly given the site a list of the priests who served at St Marys l am sure you will remember some of the names on the list. has l can remember Father O'Riordan calling at my parents home in ripon street but it was father Murphy who l liked has he spent more time at the boys club.

THE NUNS OF ST MARY'In 1856, with the approval of the Right Rev. Dr. Briggs, Bishop of Beverley, Rev. Dean Michael Trappes, parish priest of the only Catholic parish in Hull, begged for the services of the Sisters of Mercy from Baggot Street in Dublin, their Mother House. The Order had been founded by Mother Catherine McAuley in 1831, to follow a life devoted to social service, including teaching, visitation of the sick in hospital and home, child care, shelter and training for unemployed girls. So great had been the demand for Sisters, that he was referred to the recently established Convent of Mercy in Clifford, West Yorkshire, to which the Sisters had come in 1855. Five of these came to Hull in January 1857, reinforced by a novice and a postulant from Baggot Street, to a small house attached to a recently built school chapel in Dansom Lane/Wilton Street. Thus was opened the first Religious House in the town since the Dissolution. When the postulant was clothed in St. Charles’ Church, she was the first woman ever to receive the habit in Hull.
The Sisters took charge of the new school in Wilton Street – 90 boys, girls and infants - and the Girls’ school in Canning Street. Alongside this went their characteristic work of visiting the poor and the sick in their homes. Before long, they were allowed to visit the prison.
However before the nuns came to hull they had set up a convent in a small village called Clifford near boston spar. When the Rev father dean Michael Trappes requested help, 2 nuns named sister Starr and sister Kennedy along with 3 others came to St Marys they lived at the school for a short while before they bought a mansion called Keddy Hall on Anlaby road later the convent was closed in clifford and the nuns all moved to Hull

HOW THE NUNS CAME TO HULL

In 1855 a call for help was sent to the Dublin from the parish of Fr. Edward Clifford and It lead to a number of nuns been sent to the village of Clifford near Boston Spa where a convent was established .
Sister Mary Starr was appointed superior and sister Kennedy as Assistant and Bursar. Sister Starr ran a very strict and Spartan way of life at the convent
Fr Michael Trappes was priest in charge of St Charles Church and in 1856 he wrote to Dublin for help to staff a new school and chapel on the corner of Wilton street/Dansom lane
The convent in Dublin had already been drained of ready recruits so the request of Fr Michael Trappes was sent to the Clifford convent, which by this time numbered 24.
Sister Starr so that Hull offered her a chance to expand her believes and she along with Sister Kennedy and 3 other nuns came to Hull and lived in rooms of the chapel and school however because the number of pupils grew each day the nuns vacated their room with in the first twelve months
The Nuns moved into a large mansion known has “Keddys Hall’ which was on the Elm tree Estate at the corner of Anlaby road which was bought for 3,800 pounds
At there own expense the Nuns converted the stables into a elementary school for girls and also turned the dining room into a private pension school for the fee paying daughters of the middle class.
Sister Starr was to leave Hull after “The Great Convent Case “and Sister Kennedy took charge she began a new era by selling the Keddys hall and estate but kept the site of the garden plot.
She then order a new purpose built convent on the garden plot which was always referred to has “ The Mothers House” it had its own private chapel, it own elementary school ( St Joseph’s)and an adjoining secondary school St Mary’s High School” these where opened in 1883 .
The Mother house complex on Anlaby road was completely destroyed in the bombing of hull during the 2nd World War.
When Sister Kennedy died in 1894 Mother Stanislaus Dawson succeeded her.
At a public auction she was able to bid by proxy and obtain Endsleigh mansion and estate on Beverley Road in the year 1899
Once the site was bought the only Mercy teacher training collage was built along with a private elementary school after the war .
The Hull Nuns became known has the Endsleigh Nuns, Endsleigh collage and Endsleigh school By 1887 because of the traveling cost and other expenses it was decided to close the convent down in Clifford and the whole community of nuns moved from Clifford and settled in hull .
During the years the Nuns engaged themselves in a wide range of work, in addition to teaching they visited the poor and sick in their homes, made prison visits and established a” House of Mercy” in the mills and factories district where they trained women in the art of housekeeping and hygiene
they aso set up branch convents in Calton,Whitby ,Bradford,Middlesbrough,North Ormesby and 3 hull nuns went to australia . Catherine convent in hull was also opened

CHILDHOOD IMPRESSIONS
When l first started school l hated it with a passion, l just could not understand why l had to go to school,
and l can remember this lady in black dragging me away from my mother, Tears where rolling down my face has l was lead away, that nun must have had a grip like Samson has l know l kicked and pulled to try to break away from her but to no avail ,has l soon ended up in a class room of strangers. So it was understandable that l took a dislike to the nuns straight away and that dislike grew has they installed a way of discipline over me. yet during the short time they where at st Marys l also grew to like some of the nuns l think we where all sad when the time came for the nuns to leave our school.
over the years l have come into contact with lots of Nuns and l have always found them to be the most kind and caring people one wished to meet. they always have a smile on their face and a inner happiness which shines threw.
To me they are what Christianity is all about, to live in peace with thy neighbour with understanding and compassion but above, all with love

l wish to thank the St Mary Queen of Martyrs school and the church of St Mary Queen of Martyrs for allowing me to visit. it was great to be able to have a look around the new church and see some items l knew came from our ST Marys church l am sure like the priest said there must be many more items from our church there but due to the lack of documents there is no evidence to say which they are .

When We Were Young
So many years ago,
When we were oh so young,
We knew how to enjoy life,
Hang out and have some fun.
We didn’t need electricity,
Or batteries to recharge each day,
Our fun included friends our age,
And a neighbours yard just to play.
We didn’t need a cell phone,
Game boys or a coloured TV,
We just gathered up our friends,
And played together contentedly.
That’s when we were young,

The children don’t like sunshine,

No exercise do they know,
So many obese and spoiled children,

The school yard was great

.The teachers were tough

The processions we had

When school was over

Come rain or shine, we walked away
To a place were we would learn and play
Five days a week, thats were we'd be
Learning English, Maths, Science and R.E
When playtime came we'd hear the bell
Run to the tuck shop for the treats they'd sell
The girls would skip or play double ball
The boys would throw marbles against the wall
Singing ,laughter and scraping of knees
The same little girls the boys loved to tease
End of playtime , running faster
To get through the doors before the Headmaster
Behind the bike sheds , a few would hide
But if they got caught , woe betide
Teach you a lesson now your Mr Watsons guest
Out came the cane for six of the best
At lunchtime kids formed lines like pickets
Patiently waiting for their green dinner tickets
Back to lessons and netballs the game
Wearing navy blue knickers, we all looked the same
Dare to twag , better keep your head low
Round to your house , the boardman would go
Now time to leave the old school dome
Meet your friends and run along home

THOMAS BRADY
Thomas Brady was the father of my friend John Brady , Thomas who most people called Bill attended St Marys in 1924.
His daughter Jackie Brady says" He was a very intelligent person from being very young, he moved from St Mary's, and he went on to attend Charterhouse School down Charterhouse Lane. The Master in charge of the school told my Nanny & Grandad that he should go to college, but in those early days my Grandparents could not afford to send him. The nuns of St Mary's use to say to my brother John "You will never be as intelligent as you're father was" And my brother, by his own admission said " And I don't want to be".
paul says I notice that John said "and l dont want to be " .....he did not say ,,,,,,,"l could not be"

A GRACIOUS LADY
Rosemary Benstead borrowed this cutting of Ann Taylor on the night of the re-union so that it could be displayed on site l agree with Rosemary that there wont be a boy or girl who attend St Marys that does not remember Miss Ryder. If ever a teacher equaled the fame of "Goodbye Mr Chips" it would have to be this gracious Lady for she was truly a large part of St Marys schools history.thank you Rosemary for sending us this item of interest l am sure it will bring back many a memory to those that knew her

JOHN O’KANE (st marys school 1922 to 1931) by Paul Whitney

A couple of days before the school re-union Angie Moor told that John O’kane who’s age was 92 had attended St Mary’s school l rang Mr Okane and invited him to the reunion however he had just recovered from an illness so he felt that he was unable to attend the function. While on the phone to him he began to tell me a little about his-self, his life sounded very interesting and l arranged to visit him in the hope that l could hear more about his life I found him to be the most remarkable man l have ever met. He has a great memory and a wealth of information if ever there was a man who deserved a book written about him then it is Mr. John O’kane l am neither qualified or educated enough to write about this mans ex-ordinary’s life so it is best if l leave that to some one who is. so l have just added a brief outline

John was one of 7 children all of whom attended St Mary’s, he was born in 1917 down Kent Street but later the family moved to Arundell Street. He began his school life in 1922 at the age of 5 and stayed at St Mary’s until he was 14 in 1931. He was taught by nuns and female teachers has at that time there where no male teachers at the school and can remember his first day at the school. He says the lessons where very basic. He really enjoyed school and he soon became a school monitor some of his duties would be running errands for the teachers. Even at a early age he was devoted to the catholic church and learnt Latin very quickly at the age of nine he also became a alter boy. . Once a week the class would travel by tram to East Park for sports and games. They would also go for swimming lessons at east hull baths. The supervisor for the baths was a Mr. Gibson and paid for John to take a life saving course john passed this course and got a bronze medal, John also won a medal for rugby and he has still got the medal after all these years Most the children who attended the school where from the Irish community which lived in the groves area down by the river bank side these children where generally very rough yet firm discipline was kept by the nuns. One of these nuns was a Sister Mary Veronica nick named (Percy), she took the senior boys in their last years at the school, she was only a small lady but had one of the strongest characters in the whole school and nor lad dare step out of line During the war John served in the RAF he trained has a gunner but at an early stage in his training the RAF so that he had the ability to become a pilot and he was sent to the pilot training school John had different ideas and became an air navigator John flew on many dangerous missions over France and Norway and he sank at least 2 German ships for his gallant service John was award the Distinguished Flying Medal After the war John returned to Hull and joined the Police force he reach the rank of police inspector. After serving in the police force for 32 he retire in 1976

THE QUEEN ELIZABETH
This Cunard White Star Liner is the largest vessel in the world. She was built by John Brown & Co. Ltd., at Clydebank in March 1940 at the beginning of the Second World War. Her gross tonnage is 83,673 tons. She is 987 feet long and 118 feet wide, carries 2,200 passengers and a crew of 1,250. Her 27 boilers are heated by oil fuel. For the passengers comfort there are two swimming baths, shops, banks, a post office and gymnasium. The public rooms are very large and are richly furnished. During the war she was used as a troop carrier and carried 811,324 service men and women to all parts of the world and steamed 492,634 miles in doing so. At one time the Queen Elizabeth held the record for the Atlantic crossings, which she made in 1938, at an average speed of 31.69 knots. This record has since been beaten by the “United States” an American liner. The Queen Elizabeth runs between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York and maintains this run with her sister ship the Queen Mary. For navigational purposes she uses a gyro compass and two radar units of long and short ranges. She is the most important vessel in the Atlantic ferry and carries passengers luxuriously across the Atlantic in four days. Her service speed is 28½ knots. She belongs to the famous Cunard Line who own many other famous ships such as the “Queen Mary”, “Caronia” and the “Mauretainia”. The Queen Elizabeth is the flagship of the Cunard Line and carries the Commodore and a staff Captain. The letters which spell her name are nearly three feet high and it takes six tugs to dock her and many dockworkers to complete the work of docking. Each year many thousands of people travel in comfort and safety in this ship for, in spite of her age, she remains one of the outstanding and best known passenger vessels afloat.

The Mel Torme Story
Mel Torme was born on September 13th 1926. His stage career started when he was four years old. Until 18 months ago he was unknown in Great Britain and he was hardly known in the U.S.A., apart from the nights clubs where he was discovered by a disc jockey, while making an L.P. record for the “Vogue Coral” label at the fabulous Crescendo Night Club in Las Vegas. On this L.P., was the famous “Mountain Greenery” which sold over a million copies and reached fifth position in the U.S.A., best selling disc charts. Also on this L.P. was “Lady is a Tramp” “That old black magic” and “Jeepers Creepers” which all soared to the heights, both in America and over here. He also released an E.P. on the M.G.M. Label. Just recently he came to England on a most successful tour and became a great hit with parents and teenagers alike. Mel Torme can play nearly every instrument and is also a Comedian. He is nicknames “The Man with the velvet voice”.

THE HISTORY OF PRINTING In 1450 there were not then as many books in all Europe as a little library has today. Most of these books were hand written by the Greek and Roman writers but these books took years to write. John Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1410. As a boy he was interested in making things and when he grew up he became a polisher of stones then aq maker of mirrors and in his spare time he carved block books. Through his hobby of carving wood, he became the first man to give the world a book printed in separate pieces of moveable type. His work caused the greatest revolutions in the history of knowledge. The first printing was made by cutting blocks of wood and ink was poured over them, this was called woodcut drawing only drawings could be made for it was far too long a process to cut words in the blocks. Another drawback was that the block could only be used once.
Gutenberg had the wonderful idea of using separate letters. This meant that the same letters could be used again and again. A rich man named John Fust provided two sums of money to enable him to buy his types. Gutenberg was unable to work in metal so he employed a man called Schaffer to make the separate letters by carving the letter on the end of a piece of metal and then with the metal letter he punched the letter in to a softer metal to make a mould. In this way, he made lots of letters. Gutneberg was the first man to print the Bible. It was completed in 1455 and it was in Latin. The Bible was bound in two great volumes. After Gutenberg, Frederick Konig, who was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1774 invented the cylinder press. Up to this time, all printing was done on a flat press. With the cylinder press, the papers could be printed as fast as the cylinder could turn. The cylinder press printed 1,500 copies an hour. Nowadays a newspaper company can turn out 120,000 newspapers an hour.

SCHOOL’S RUGBY
1956-57 season was the best season we have had for a long time. We had two teams, “A” and “C”. The “A” team were third in the league and reached the semi-final of the Cup. We had four boys in the City team, Meekin, Morley, McGowan and Bullock, who also gained his Yorkshire Cap. We played 18 matches, lost 5, drew 2 and won 11. The team was:- Full-back T. Watson D. Gene Vinsent was born in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A. on July 21st 1935. He first acquired a guitar at the age of twelve. It was given to him by a friend in West Virginia while Vinsent was visiting him. Gene did a lot of singing with his sisters in Church. While travelling round Virginia, he heard some negroes singing Hill-Billy songs at a Country store. This so impressed Gene that he made up his mind to make a career out of singing and to transport these songs into jute-box style. At the age of seventeen, Gene joined the Navy. He used to spend many long nights aboard the tanker, singing and playing to his shipmates. After leaving the Navy, Gene went for an audition at a radio show where he came first out of hundreds of contestants. He then formed a group and called them his Bluecaps, made up of Lead guitar Gallopin Cliff Gallop, Rhythm Guitar, We Willie Williams, Bass, Sack Neal and Drums Be Bop-Harrell. The Capital Recording Company heard of Gene and soon signed him. His success continued and so popular did he and the Bluecaps become that they appeared in the film “The Girl Can’t Help It”, Gene doing the vocal accompanied by his Bluecaps.

RALEIGH “Where will we find another such head” This piece was wrung from one of the spectators of the execution of Sir Walter Raleigh in the Old Place Yard on October 23rd 1618. Raleigh was born in Devonshire at Hayes, Barton, in the year 1552. He entered Oriel College, Oxford, but he only stayed a year before going out to France to fight with the Hugenouts in 1580. After this he went to the Netherlands to fight with the Dutch against Spain. The he moved again, but this time to Ireland to fight against the Irish at Cork and showed his great skill in fighting and soon appeared in the Court of Elizabeth I.
He gained great favours and he soon became the Queen’s favourite. He was made Captain of the Guards, was knighted and given a house in the Strand which was calling “Durham House”. He also owned 40,000 acres besides his estate in Dorset. He went o America and colonised the State of Virginia and named it after the Virgin Queen. Then sailing for the coast he discovered Guiana and he also founded the great gold mines of Minano. On returning home he brought back the potato plant which in those days was a newly found plant and he also brought back some tobacco. When he came back to England he was threatened with war with Spain and the Armada was on its way. He was made Vice-Admiral of Devon and chased the Spanish to Ireland where he sunk many a Spanish Galleon. Everything went well with Raleigh for he had married on of the Queen’s Maids of Honour but when the Queen died in 1603 James I came to the throne and no sooner had he done so he put Raleigh in the Tower of London on a charge of treason for gaining so many high positions during the Queen’s reign. It was thought he had done so through false pretences. He stayed in The Tower for thirteen years awaiting his sentence of death and while he waited, he wrote the book, “History of the World”. The King released Raleigh in 1617 but only for his own ends for he sent him on an expedition to the Orinoco River and to the Minano Gold Mines, but it met with disaster for half his ships were lost, so he returned home. When he returned, he was taken before a Court and charged with the same charge as in 1603. The very next day October 29th, 1618 he was executed. After the execution a bystander wrote this:- “I saw in all the standers by, Pale death only in thine are, Farewell truth, shall this story say We died, thou only lived that day”.

THE CONVENT

The convent of our lady of mercy is on anlaby road, and is a substantial Gothic building of red brick, with stone dressings, three stories in height.
The front elevation presents, in the centre of a large but plain block of buildings, with three tiers of six windows each, at the east angle is a tower, and at the west a gable. beneath which is a stone niche.
There is a chapel at the northwest angle, with a richly adorned sanctuary. In the rear are the schools, which accommodate 600 girls and infants in elementary classes, and 40 select pupils are taught in another portion of the building.
The present convent was erected in 1874. All the pupil teachers employed both here and in the schools at mill street, Wilton street, and in infants school in pryme street, reside here.
The number of children under the care of the sisters is over 1,500.
There are branch houses subject to this convent at Beverley, Whitby and north Ormsby near Middlesbrough.
The next step in the march of progress, was the erection of st Mary's school-chapel in Wilton street, for the catholics east of the river hull.This building which cost £3,000 was opened in October 8th 1856 and continued to be used as a church.
The next great work in connection with catholicity here was the introduction of the sisters of mercy in 1857, who were first located in a private mansion on anlaby road.
This was followed by the erection of a boy's school in pryme street, in 1863; of saint Patrick's chapel and schools in mill street , in 1870 and of st Mary's church, Wilton street in 1890.

ST MARY'S CHURCH
St Mary's Church, in Wilton street, is designed in the early English style of architecture, and consists of a nave 65 ft by 22 ft wide, with north and south aisles, 10ft wide, which terminate at the east end in side chapels.
The sanctuary has a circular apse, and is divided from the nave by a lofty arch,resting on a cluster of polished marble shafts, with richly carved capitals, of early English pattern, and molded bands and bases.
The nave is divided on either side from the aisles by an arcade of four bays of molded arches and labels on stone columns. In the spandrils of the arches are circular panels with angels in attitudes of devotion, and above the arcade is a clerestory lighted by lancet-shaped windows.
The nave is laid with wood blocks in a herringbone patter, whilst the sanctuary is laid with encaustic tiles, and the steps to the pridella are of polished Sicilian marble.The alter rails are of white ancaster stone, with polished alabastor rails.There are a large sacristy and two confessionals.
The six windows of the sanctuary are filled with stained glass. The high alter consists of arcaded niches, containing six large statues of saints.The pulpit , which is a very fine one,and the font are of ancaster stone, beautifully carved and enriched with green marble columns.
The west elevation is the principle feature. The two stone doorways are under one deeply recessed moulded brick arch, in the centre of which is a representation of Our Lord, crowned with thorns, and on either side spandrils of richly carved foliage.Over this arch is a crocketed gable , in the apex of which is a carved niche containing a statue of the Madonna and child.
Rising above this there is a deeply recessed triplet window, with stone columns and carved capitals.The church will accommodate 500 persons, and costs £2,000. It was built in 1090-1, from designs of Messrs. Smith& Broderick , and mr arthur lowther, the joint architects.
Anew organ was added in February 1892, adjoining the church are q the schools which, until the erection of the present church, were used for dual purposes of a school and chapel.It is neat red brick structure, in the early English style .

Nora Cross, Music Teacher 1929

Nora was born on May 21st. 1910. She was a delicate child, and at the age of 5 became ill with T.B. and wasn't expected to live. When she was 6 she was crowned May Queen in St. Mary's Church, Wilton Street, Hull for that very reason. This was young for a May Queen, so it was a lovely gesture. one l am sure must have pleased her family.
Nora didn't start going to school until she was 9, and started taking music lessons at 10 years old. Her first degree was presented to her when she was 17, and at 19 years of age she received her second degree, from the London College of Music, enabling her to be a fully qualified music teacher.
She married Ernir Bickerstaffe in 1930 at St. Mary's Church where she had been crowned May Queen. They had 5 children, Ernie junior (deceased), Paddy, Maureen, Sheila and Michael, then became grandparents to 10, and great grandparents to 8. Not bad for someone who was not expected to live beyond early childhood!

Nora died in 1990 at the age of 89 after a long and happy life, loved by everyone who knew her.

BECAUSE THE SCHOOL PLAY GROUNDS WHERE NOT LARGE ENOUGH THE SENIOR SCHOOL BOYS USE TO HAVE TO GO ACROSS THE DAMSON LANE ROAD TO THE RECREATION GROUNDS FOR THEY PLAY BREAKS AND AFTER DINNER BREAKS. When the war broke out, I was two weeks from my 15th birthday. I went for a holiday to my aunt’s in Nottingham, and my mother wrote that I should stay there, because of the bombing in Hull. I stayed nearly two years.
I joined up with the WAAF in 1942, when I was 17 and a half. They only wanted cooks and balloon operators, and after the aptitude test I was sent to Sheffield to train as a balloon operator.
When we passed out they send me back to Hull, which I didn’t want, because I’d joined up to see the world, but they said we shouldn’t break the team up. So I went back to Hull, and we were stationed next to Reckitt’s on Damson Lane. The site’s still there.
The balloon was 63ft long, filled with half air and half hydrogen, with the hydrogen at the top and a wet cloth to keep the two separate so it wouldn’t catch fire. We had to wear gloves to fill it. It was attached to a very long line on a motorised winch on the back of a lorry. Operating the balloon was just like driving, except you were looking up.
When there was an air raid, we got the codeword ‘shine’: that meant take the balloon as high up as you can. When our fighters came along we had to bring it back down.
Once the engine broke down on the lorry and we couldn’t bring it down, and it was panic stations!
The wire could swing a lot with the wind, and when we took the balloon down, it would sometimes go into the trees between us and Reckitt’s with the crosswind. The men coming out of Reckitt’s were often surprised, because it was heading right for them. The guy ropes used to get round the trees too, and up went the trees, roots and everything. There was a ripcord on the side, and sometimes the balloon damaged itself when you took it down.
There was a crew of about 6 of us on the site, and 2 corporals, all women. We had two Nissen Huts on site that we lived in, so we didn’t go home very often while on duty. We had to do our own cooking (I was sent on a week’s cooking course to Sutton, at the big RAF camp). Once you were on site you were on your own. We did all sorts of stupid things like give each other rides on the balloon, but not very high up.
It was a filthy job: all mechanical, black, and wind blowing. We had to do wire splicing, rope splicing, and drive the winch. Only two of us ever drove it, the Hull girls, the only ones who’d been in air raids.
It worried my mum and dad. My mum used to send my dad round to see it I was all right. My dad was a tug-master, and he used to take supplies to crews that operated balloons on the Humbler. So you could say it was in the family
