My Memories of St Mary's...... Adored the processions that we had down Holderness Road. The outside toilets, absolutley freezing in winter! Many a happy time spent on Danny Lane plagy, remember getting a lovely black eye off the horse that was on there, and the 'big old traction engine' what a rust bucket that was! Popping into the parky's hut to get warm near his fire, (wouldn't be allowed nowadays.) Bottles of milk , always went for the fat dumpy bottles because I thought there was more milk in them than the thinner bottles (I wasn't a greedy child...honest) Trips to the seaside, Hornsea I think it was, lovely 'sand sandwiches' to eat. Playing cricket with the lads on the beach. Being sick after I made my first Holy Communion, Miss Leahy had to take me out of church, she was not too pleased as I remember.
My two elder sisters and brother also went to St Marys, they are John Veronica and Sheila Brady, our John started in 1950, my two sister's started there in 1956 and '57. Our Von remembers Mrs Monks tieing her to the blackboard for being 'naughty' in class,(imagine teachers doing that today!)
My Dad Bill use to talk alot about St Mary's Boy's Club, he did a bit of boxing when he was younger, he alway's told me that the club was haunted by an old nun, he also attended the school in 1924, but he moved to Charterhouse school, down Charterhouse Lane .Sadly he has passed away, he had so many memories of the club and both schools, but sadly they are all gone now. I wish I had found this site sooner, he would of loved it.
Remember being in flood's of tears when it was time to leave St Mary's at the age of 9, and having to go to St Richard's. It felt strange not going into church before school started.
I'll have you know they were the height of fashion, it use to take me ages to iron them and get the pleats just right, and no Shy I haven't got them stashed away,(haha,) well at least I don't think so! I thought it was taken in nanny's backyard, thanks for pointing that out, John. She was a lovely lady, you're right there. I can still remember going in the middle room where she and grandad use to sit, and pulling down the door of like a larder cupboard (that use to be next to door to go upstairs) and getting her favourite ginger biscuits out, then grandad would shout, "Don't be touching them if you've been picking you're nose, go wash you're hands first.!" haha, he was a character wasn't he? I can still see him in the room getting his cobbler's last out and and mending some ones boots or shoes. Do you remember that large picture of Christ with the Sacred Heart that nanny had hung up in her front room? I thought it had been chucked away, but aunt Vera had it all those years after nanny & grandad died. Then our sheila found it when she was sorting aunt Ve's things out she then gave it to aunt Mary, so our John's got it now, It was nanny's favourite picture. Jackie xxx

Withernsea was all the rage for annual holidays I guess. I have a couple of me our Colleen and Aunt Ol & Uncle Tom taken at withy, not that I remember much about going there. Oh I do remember that bit about having to go to the castle if you hurt yourself, though. Can't say I remember any Punch & Judy shows, John, they must of been before my time, haha! The one of you & our Johnny Bowen on the beach was given to me by Aunt Ol. I remember when I and some friends use to go in the car on a weekend sometimes with Dad to withernsea, and on the way there the first one to spot the lighthouse got a tanner, and sitting outside of SpreadEagle with a packet of crisps and a glass of lemonade with a straw, I use to love those days. Things of changed for the worst, I think now. Glad you enjoyed yourselves in Ostend. Love Jackie xx
